Sometimes finding your purpose isn't about knowing exactly what you're supposed to do. Sometimes you just have to start paying attention to what makes you feel alive — and be willing to follow it.

One afternoon, Tara Mendoza arrived home to find an unexpected, joyful surprise awaiting her in the driveway: a vintage 1947 red-and-white Borden's ice cream bike, adorned with a giant blue Samuel Adams umbrella. It was a gift from her husband and sons, a whimsical beacon signaling the start of a new, colorful chapter. At that moment, the vision for Dirty Lickins Ice Cream, a vibrant mobile dessert business, began to crystallize, bringing forth a rush of emotions that made her both laugh and cry.

This spontaneous gesture marked a profound turning point for Mendoza, an Army veteran and longtime legal professional who spent years fulfilling demanding roles. As she puts it, she is now “in a season of rediscovering who I am outside of all the roles I've held throughout my life.” This journey, she acknowledges, might just be her favorite chapter yet, a testament to the power of embracing the unexpected and chasing genuine fulfillment.

The Permission to Search

Mendoza's path to entrepreneurship was not linear. For years, she excelled in the legal field, a career born from a practical decision after her military service. While she built a stable life in Las Vegas after moving there at her brother's urging, a quiet dissatisfaction simmered beneath the surface. A conversation with an attorney at her firm proved to be a pivotal moment. She confessed feeling unhappy and unfulfilled, and his simple, profound advice was to "go find something outside of here that fulfills you."

This seemingly straightforward statement was a revelation. "For some reason, I had never given myself permission to think that way," Mendoza reflects. Armed with this newfound freedom, she began to explore. She became a life coach, wrote a book, and tried various ventures. Each experiment, even those that didn't become "the thing," chipped away at her self-imposed limitations, revealing new facets of her personality and capabilities. By late 2024, a clear desire emerged: to feel excitement, happiness, and fun. And from this deep-seated yearning, the idea of an ice cream business, a vibrant departure from her established life, was born.

A Family Affair and Affordable Joy

Dirty Lickins Ice Cream is more than just a business; it’s a family endeavor, deeply rooted in Mendoza's love for the islands and a desire to spread joy. Her husband, Danny, intuitively understood her vision wasn't for a stationary shop, guiding her towards a mobile concept. Danny, and her sons, Nico and Sam, pooled their money for the iconic ice cream bike, while her son Johnny gifted the funds for business licenses. On April 1, 2025, Dirty Lickins officially launched, bringing its colorful, playful, and island-inspired treats to festivals, markets, and private events across Las Vegas.

Beyond the delicious offerings, Mendoza and her team are dedicated to making fun accessible. As former single parents, she and Danny remember the challenge of finding affordable entertainment for their children. This experience shaped Dirty Lickins' mission to be a source of smiles without breaking the bank. "We ARE firm believers that the world could use more reasons to smile, and we also believe having a little fun shouldn't have to be expensive," Mendoza states. This commitment is evident in their "Dollar Deals," ensuring that every family, regardless of budget, can enjoy a treat without anyone feeling left out.

The Art of Saying No and Defining Success

Building a thriving business has brought its own set of challenges, particularly for someone as enthusiastic and relationship-driven as Mendoza. She describes learning to say no as one of the hardest decisions she's had to make. Initially, every invitation felt like an opportunity not to be missed. However, she quickly learned that not all opportunities are created equal. "An event can look great on paper... but once you factor in vendor fees, inventory, ice, transportation, help, setup, breakdown and the hours involved, sometimes the numbers tell a very different story."

This ongoing lesson in discernment is crucial for sustainability. Mendoza acknowledges that saying no doesn't mean ingratitude; it means protecting the time, money, and energy needed for the right opportunities. This evolving understanding reflects a broader shift in her definition of success. For years, it was about checking boxes and fulfilling perceived duties. Today, success is about freedom: freedom to choose how she spends her time, to create, to try new things, and to build a life that feels authentic to her. While growth and profitability are important, the true measure of success for Mendoza lies in the connections made, the community fostered, and the simple joy of an exhausted, yet fulfilling day.

Building a Life, Not Just a Business

Mendoza is currently building two things simultaneously: Dirty Lickins and herself. She aims for her business to grow without sacrificing the personality and heart that define it, envisioning a future where the little pink popsicle is a recognized symbol of joy throughout Las Vegas. But more profoundly, she is building a life characterized by more freedom, more experiences, and genuine excitement.

Working her full-time job while nurturing Dirty Lickins, Mendoza finds herself in the middle of an exhilarating, unfolding story. She doesn't have all the answers, nor does she need them. "Now I'm learning to trust myself enough to take the next step, see where it leads and adjust along the way," she shares. She wants to keep saying yes to what makes her feel alive and no to what drains her, continually creating, learning, and laughing. Ultimately, Tara Mendoza is building a life that, someday, she can look back on and confidently say: she didn't just go through it; she was actually there for it.
