“Success now is building a life that is beautiful enough to carry the work. The practice gets to be an important expression of that life—but it doesn’t have to consume it.”

It was a tiny, one-room apothecary in a remote mountain village in Crete, and inexplicably, a quarter of the space was occupied by an enormous volcanic boulder. The walls had been built around it, the medicines and equipment awkwardly arranged. For Dr. Sydney Freggiaro, a budding naturopathic physician on a post-medical school journey, it was a business puzzle. Why would anyone sacrifice so much valuable space? The answer she received from the herbalist, Janina Sorensen, would become a foundational principle for Dr. Freggiaro’s own practice in Las Vegas: the rock was a spatial meditation, a reminder that her practice was not the center of her world. It was a practice intentionally built around something bigger than the medicine, ensuring the work could sustain her. This philosophy would later guide her in constructing Naturopathic Nevada, a clinic as much about sustainable living as it is about healing.

Coming Home to Opportunity

Though born and raised in Las Vegas, Dr. Freggiaro left at 18 with no intention of returning. Her path was circuitous, winding through pre-med, cancer research, and professional dance before she found her calling at Bastyr University. There, she discovered naturopathic medicine, a system that finally addressed her persistent question: "Why aren’t we helping people actually get better?" During her studies, mentors encouraged her to consider Nevada, despite its lack of naturopathic licensing, professional infrastructure, and practitioners. What many saw as a limitation, she began to see as an opportunity. Armed with student debt, modest savings, and a good deal of courage, she returned to Las Vegas and, in 2019, opened Naturopathic Nevada in her mother’s converted garage.

"What I thought was going to be the challenge of bringing naturopathic medicine to an underserved state ultimately became an incredible gift," Dr. Freggiaro explains. Without an established model to follow, she was free to build a practice entirely aligned with her beliefs about healing. This meant creating a space where patients weren't just heard, but empowered to understand their own bodies and actively participate in their health journey. Her approach is foundational, looking beyond symptoms to explore nutrition, environment, stress, sleep, and relationships, utilizing tools like botanical medicine and constitutional hydrotherapy to support the body's innate capacity to heal. She proved that Las Vegas, often overlooked in natural medicine conversations, was deeply hungry for this kind of care.

Navigating Uncharted Waters

Just five months after opening her doors, the world shifted. COVID-19 hit, forcing the closure of her physical practice as naturopathic doctors were not yet recognized as physicians in Nevada. With limited financial cushion and a nascent patient base, it was a moment of profound doubt. "For the first time, I genuinely questioned whether coming home to Nevada had been a mistake," she recalls. Yet, this adversity didn't derail her; it refined her approach. She pivoted to virtual consultations, took a part-time job, and kept her business lean, focusing on community usefulness rather than forced growth. This experience forged a deeper resilience.

"Looking back, COVID taught me one of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a founder: a challenge is not necessarily evidence that you're on the wrong path. Sometimes it’s an invitation to become more adaptable about how you walk it." This philosophy continues to shape her clinic today, fostering a focus on depth over volume, and resilience over rapid expansion. The aim is to build something that can adapt through difficult seasons without compromising its core philosophy, the people it serves, or the life she has carefully crafted.

A Broader Definition of Success

Dr. Freggiaro’s definition of success has evolved significantly. Early on, it was about proving the viability of naturopathic medicine in Las Vegas—filling schedules, growing the business, and achieving financial success. While she's proud to have achieved these milestones, she realized that a successful practice doesn't automatically equate to a successful life. Now, success means deeply believing in her work, being fully present with her patients, maintaining a financially healthy business, and having ample space for her marriage, family, friendships, nature, and personal passions. "I don’t want to build something I can sustain for five impressive years," she states. "I want to still love this medicine decades from now."

This long-term vision means making intentional choices: prioritizing enough over more, depth over volume, and safeguarding personal time that could easily be consumed by additional appointments or projects. It’s about building a life that is beautiful enough to carry the meaningful work she does, ensuring the practice enhances, rather than consumes, her existence.

Cultivating Desert Medicinals

Looking ahead, Dr. Freggiaro is expanding her reach beyond the clinic with Desert Medicinals, a line of small-batch, organic herbal teas. These blends are inspired by the resilience of the Mojave Desert and are a direct extension of her eight years of clinical experience. She’s seen firsthand the profound impact botanical medicine can have when integrated into daily life and aims to make these powerful blends more accessible to the general public.

"You shouldn’t have to be a patient of mine to experience the herbs I’ve spent years working with and learning from," she shares. Through Desert Medicinals, she hopes to offer her community a simple, beautiful ritual—a daily cup of tea rooted in the potent plants of their local landscape. It's another thoughtful doorway, inviting more people to reconnect with nature's wisdom and their own innate healing capacity, all while continuing to build a life and a practice that truly embodies her vision of sustainable well-being.
