Portrait of Amber Guthery
“For a long time, success looked like MORE. Now, I’ve taken soooo many things off that list. At this point in my life, if it doesn’t feel good, if it isn’t fun, or if I genuinely don’t want to do it, I'm not doing it.”

The road to a fulfilling creative career is rarely straight, and for Amber Guthery, it was a winding path paved with grit, self-motivation, and an unshakeable belief in her artistic vision. Her journey, which began in a small Iowa town that felt too confining, has led her to become a globally recognized cosmetic tattoo artist and educator, now anchoring a vibrant studio in the heart of the Las Vegas Arts District.

The Unconventional Blueprint

Guthery’s early life in Des Moines, Iowa, was marked by a distinct feeling of not belonging. Surrounded by “real-world thinkers,” her artistic inclinations were often met with pragmatic advice. “Art can’t make you money, and it isn’t something you can do with your life,” she recalls hearing. This early dissonance fueled a fierce desire to forge her own path, leading her to apply to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles without her parents' initial knowledge. Her acceptance marked the beginning of a daring cross-country move, a leap of faith into an unknown city where she knew no one and had no place to live. It was a baptism by fire, but one that solidified her independent spirit.

In Los Angeles, Guthery immersed herself in the art world, pursuing a dual major in Fashion Design and Merchandising and Visual Communications. Her time there was a kaleidoscope of experiences: an unsettling textile apprenticeship with a drug dealer, a design role for a celebrity client that ended abruptly, and a stint in the costume department at Universal Studios. Each experience, whether challenging or inspiring, honed her resilience. “Honestly, I wouldn’t change any of it. I had some of the best years of my life there,” she reflects, acknowledging that navigating such varied terrain was essential to her growth.

From Hustle to Heart

After six years of constant hustle in LA, juggling multiple jobs just to pay rent, Guthery sought a change. With her dog and cat in tow, she moved to Las Vegas, arriving with two jobs but no place to live—a situation she quickly resolved by signing a lease hours after arriving. It was during this period, working grueling shifts at a breakfast restaurant and cocktailing on the Strip, that she discovered her calling in permanent makeup. Tired of meticulously applying her eyebrows after graveyard shifts, she saw the transformative power of cosmetic tattooing firsthand. Once she had her own eyebrows tattooed, an apprenticeship opportunity presented itself, and she seized it, spending the next five years meticulously learning the craft while continuing to cocktail to make ends meet.

The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, initially a source of fear, became an unexpected catalyst for introspection and innovation. The forced slowdown allowed Guthery to dream, focus on her health, and, critically, to create. “If the world ends tomorrow, what is it that I still need to accomplish?” she remembers asking herself. The answer was clear: open her own business. Despite the prevailing uncertainty, she chose to see opportunity, securing a deal on a lease and taking her time to build her dream studio. This period underscored her belief that every adventure, hard season, and even mistake, had propelled her forward.

Mentorship and Mastery

Guthery’s work today extends beyond the tattoo chair. She takes immense pride in her role as a mentor and educator, guiding artists worldwide. “Being able to teach artists not only the technical side of this industry, but also help them build confidence, think differently, and create careers that actually support their lives means so much to me,” she explains. She champions the idea that artists can achieve financial stability without sacrificing their creative integrity, dispelling the myth of the “starving artist.”

Her personal journey is a testament to this philosophy. Opening her studio in the Las Vegas Arts District, a dream she harbored for 13 years, is a crowning achievement. She embraces the gap between taste and skill, viewing it not as a hindrance but as a growth engine. “Instead of lowering my expectations to match my current skill level, I usually do the opposite. I figure it out. I practice, experiment, mess it up, learn something new, and keep going until I can finally create what my brain has been seeing all along,” she says. This relentless pursuit of mastery has made her a sought-after wing eyeliner tattoo artist, drawing clients from across the globe.

Building a Creative Hub

Now, at 40, Guthery’s definition of success has evolved. It’s less about doing more, and more about doing what truly excites her. “I want freedom. I want creativity. I want to work on things that excite me. I want time to actually enjoy the life I’ve spent all these years building,” she shares. Her new focus involves shifting away from large group trainings to more individualized one on one training, while adding virtual mentorships, ensuring artists receive personalized guidance.

Her Las Vegas Arts District studio is becoming more than just a tattoo space. It’s a community hub, hosting “Preview Night” events where artists tattoo live, and local creatives—singers, painters, comedians, and makers—showcase their talents. The studio also serves as a home for her podcast, “Inspired by Ms Amber Red,” spotlighting local businesses and the stories behind their creations. Guthery is building toward something refreshing and authentic, blurring the lines between art, education, entertainment, and community. She is committed to creating the things she wishes existed, fostering collaborations, and building her own blueprint for success in the heart of Las Vegas.
