Watching the industry grow while continuing to grow with it has been incredibly rewarding. It’s no longer just about what the next job is, but about building a body of work, a team, and a company that can keep evolving.

In the pulsating heart of a Birmingham nightclub, a seemingly casual conversation sparked a revolution. It was 2003, and Ed Shaw, fresh from university with a video specialization, found himself chatting with the lighting technician. The club's visuals, he discovered, were little more than a VHS tape on a loop. A nascent curiosity ignited within him, a flicker that would soon become the blinding light of a global visual entertainment powerhouse. That moment, discussing the rudimentary visual playback system, was the unlikely genesis of a career that has shaped the look and feel of modern live performance, culminating in his role as co-founder of 36NORTH, a creative studio pushing the boundaries of visual content worldwide.

The Spark of an Empire

Shaw's journey began not in the neon glow of Las Vegas, but in the gritty, creative landscape of the UK. That pivotal conversation at Godskitchen led to a full-time role, plunging him into the vibrant world of nightclub shows, festivals, and world tours. This early immersion in live environments provided an invaluable education, teaching him the critical interplay between visuals and audience experience. His expertise deepened, leading him to Las Vegas in 2013 to join Hakkasan Group as Director of Video Production. He was instrumental in the opening of Hakkasan Nightclub that same year, laying the foundation for everything he would go on to build. "That move really became the starting point for everything I’ve gone on to build here in Las Vegas and the projects we do around the world," he reflects.

Crafting Immersive Worlds

His portfolio is a testament to the evolution of live entertainment. From early projects like the multi-year Godskitchen world tour and its pioneering Boombox show in 2009, Shaw was at the forefront of transforming electronic music performances into truly immersive spectacles. He witnessed the industry shift from simple club visuals to sophisticated productions where video, lighting, stage design, and technology coalesce into a singular, breathtaking experience. His work has illuminated iconic venues and stages, including OMNIA's kinetic chandelier, large-scale deadmau5 productions featuring the iconic Cube, and the record-breaking Kx5 shows with deadmau5 and Kaskade at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. For Shaw, the ultimate satisfaction lies in having contributed to this dramatic evolution. He states, "I think what I’m most proud of is having been part of that evolution."

Bridging the Vision Gap

For any creative, the gap between what one envisions and what one can execute is a constant challenge. Shaw, however, views this not as a limitation but as a vital catalyst for growth. He believes that "Your taste should always be slightly ahead of what you can currently execute, because that’s what pushes you to improve." Early in his career, this meant mastering new software and techniques; today, as a creative director and studio owner, it involves understanding when to bring in specialists whose skills complement his vision. He champions the idea of a clear creative vision, communicated effectively enough to empower a team to push an idea further than any individual could alone. This dynamic interplay ensures the work remains fresh, innovative, and endlessly engaging.

Building for the Future

Success, for Ed Shaw, has transformed over time. While early triumphs were measured by the scale of a show or the prestige of an artist, his current definition is deeply rooted in the sustainable growth of 36NORTH. Building a company with trusted partners, Alvaro Turino Grosso and Cody Campbell, has imbued every project with a personal stake. "Every client, every opportunity, every mistake and every win feels more personal," he explains. His focus now is on cultivating a team, expanding creative capabilities, and pursuing projects that align with the studio's evolving vision. He draws inspiration from the vibrant Las Vegas creative scene and mentors who taught him the importance of constant refinement and never settling for the first version.

Looking ahead, Shaw is excited about upcoming projects with touring artists, including the annual deadmau5 show at Red Rocks, and a host of other productions currently in the works. The overarching goal is to continue building 36NORTH, attracting more diverse creative talent, and venturing into increasingly ambitious territory. The aim is not just growth for growth's sake, but a creatively focused expansion that remains true to the studio's core values. He seeks to "keep pushing into bigger and more ambitious territory, while making sure the company grows in a way that still feels creatively focused and true to what we want 36NORTH to be." With an unwavering commitment to innovation and a passion for crafting unparalleled visual narratives, Ed Shaw and 36NORTH are poised to continue defining the future of live entertainment, one awe-inspiring experience at a time.
