There are so many ups and downs. Sometimes it feels like you should give up, but you truly have to push through and believe you can get to where you want to be.

One of Lukas Santos's earliest dates with his now-wife, Kristen, was a camping trip to Mt. Charleston. This shared love for the outdoors, a bond forged amidst the rugged beauty of Southern Nevada, laid the unexpected groundwork for their entrepreneurial journey. Years later, with the arrival of their son, the couple faced a common dilemma: how to comfortably continue their cherished camping adventures with a new addition. Their solution was not to compromise, but to create.

Building a Dream, One Trailer at a Time

That solution began modestly, in their garage, with the construction of their first offroad camper trailer. This initial build was born of necessity, a desire to provide a comfortable sleeping space for their infant son during outdoor excursions. A subsequent road trip down the California coast solidified their passion. "From our first trip down the California coast, we were hooked, and we loved the process of learning and putting our trailer together," Lukas reflects. This hands-on experience, coupled with Lukas's subsequent immersion in professional metal fabrication, provided the foundational skills and insights needed to elevate their craft beyond a mere hobby. They’ve since evolved significantly, moving "a long way from wood frames and thrifted axles" to the sophisticated designs of Lost Road Campers.

Navigating the Entrepreneurial Wilderness

Launching Lost Road Campers in 2024, Lukas and Kristen, both proud Las Vegas natives, set out to design and build high-quality, offroad-ready camper trailers. Their philosophy centers on simplicity and functionality, ensuring the camping experience remains focused on the outdoors while providing a comfortable retreat. The initial months of their venture were a whirlwind of activity, with one early decision proving particularly impactful: attending an Overland Expo tradeshow. This immersive experience exposed them to a vast array of designs, from custom truck campers to grand RVs, offering a rich source of inspiration to integrate into their own builds.

However, the path to entrepreneurship was not without its unexpected hurdles. While they meticulously planned for design and manufacturing, the administrative burden of starting a business proved to be a significant learning curve. "One thing we wildly underestimated was how much paperwork is required to start a business," Lukas admits, recounting the disheartening process of navigating city, state, and federal regulations. The repeated trips to the DMV, sometimes changing paperwork only to revert to initial filings, illustrated the bureaucratic maze they had to conquer.

Defining Success Beyond the Build

Despite the challenges, Lukas emphasizes the importance of perseverance. For him and Kristen, success isn't solely measured by units sold or profits earned. It's deeply intertwined with their core values and lifestyle. "Success to us is being able to do something we truly enjoy, and still having time to get out there with your friends and family," he shares. They believe that sharing the joy of the outdoors with others is only truly fulfilling if they can also experience it themselves.

Inspired by the resilience of fellow small business owners in Las Vegas who tirelessly pursue their dreams, Lukas and Kristen are focused on the future. Their immediate goal is to refine their production process, aiming to "streamline our build process" to deliver trailers to customers more efficiently while upholding their stringent quality standards. As Lost Road Campers continues to grow, it remains rooted in a simple yet profound desire: to enable more people to embrace the freedom and joy of the open road, comfortably and with confidence, one meticulously crafted trailer at a time.

Lukas Santos, alongside his wife Kristen, is the co-founder of Lost Road Campers, a Las Vegas-based company specializing in the design and manufacture of high-quality offroad camper trailers. Born and raised in Las Vegas, he combines a passion for the outdoors with expertise in metal fabrication to create durable and functional mobile habitats.
