On a typical Saturday morning in Las Vegas, the city might be just waking up from a vibrant Friday night. But for Jeffrey Silerio, director of Shine City Project, it’s already prime time for action. He gathers his volunteers, ready to tackle another community service project, fueled not by obligation, but by a deeply ingrained desire to uplift his hometown. This commitment began over a decade ago, sparked by a simple invitation that reshaped his entire trajectory.

A Calling Born in College

Silerio's path wasn't always clear-cut. Growing up in Las Vegas, he initially pursued computer science at UNLV. Yet, even in his academic pursuits, a quiet sense of purpose lingered. He found immense satisfaction in helping his peers with math problems, a small act that brought him unexpected joy. "It gave me a sense of value, purpose, and joy. I really enjoyed doing it," he shared, reflecting on those early experiences.

This innate desire to contribute found its true outlet during his sophomore year at UNLV. A Japanese missionary extended an invitation that would change everything: join the newly formed Shine City Project. The organization's audacious goal – to transform Las Vegas from "Sin City to Shine City" – resonated deeply with Silerio's budding sense of altruism. He saw it as an opportunity to be part of something greater, a meaningful way to contribute to his community. After attending his first cleanup in April 2013, he was hooked. For 18 months, he didn't miss a single cleanup, often held twice a week. His consistent dedication quickly propelled him into a leadership role, cementing his commitment to the organization.

More Than Just Cleaning

Shine City Project’s mission extends far beyond the physical act of cleaning up. It's about cultivating a spirit of selflessness in a city often stereotyped by indulgence. Silerio and his team aim to build leaders "of heart and character who share love and compassion for others while being stewards for the environment." They partner with various local organizations, always striving to meet the community's most pressing needs with a heart of service.

His commitment to the environment was vividly demonstrated during his college years when Shine City Project was a registered student organization at UNLV. They often collaborated with UNLV's sustainability coordinator, Tara Pike-Nordstrom, to clean up Sam Boyd Stadium after major events like football games and motocross. These were not glamorous tasks. "It was a lot of work, and we often smelled like beer afterwards," Silerio recalled with a laugh. They'd spend hours late into the night, meticulously collecting recyclables and compostables, often working past midnight. These memorable experiences reinforced the tangible impact of their efforts and the dedication required to make a difference.

The Ripple Effect of Joy

For Silerio, success isn't merely about completing a task. It's about the human connection fostered along the way. He believes that the true measure of a service project's success lies in the experience of the volunteers themselves. "When people are having conversations with each other, laughing, smiling, and having fun while working, then I consider the service project to be a success," he explained. This focus on shared enjoyment and camaraderie ensures that volunteers return, and the movement continues to grow.

His work with Shine City Project has not only benefited the community but has also profoundly impacted Silerio himself.
