A Defining Stand on Fremont Street

The scorching Las Vegas sun beat down on Fremont Street, illuminating a tense standoff. Tomi Lin Love and her partner, Jasmine, found themselves at the tail end of a protest march, observing a disproportionate police presence. What unfolded next was a moment of quiet defiance that would ignite a fierce commitment to community action. As officers retreated, leaving behind a case of bottled water, Tomi, her foot aching, confronted them about the discarded resources. They ignored her. "They didn’t, but I did," she recalls, a simple act that crystallized her resolve. This wasn't just about picking up litter; it was about acknowledging a need, speaking truth to power, and then acting where others wouldn't. This incident didn't just spark an advocacy journey; it solidified the very foundation of The People’s Medic, keeping its mission unwavering.

The Genesis of Compassion

Tomi, a Registered Nurse with 16 years of experience, and Jasmine, a Nurse Practitioner, co-founded The People’s Medic (TPM) from a deeply personal place. Their journey began not with a grand plan, but with an inability to ignore the stark realities on the streets of downtown Las Vegas. They witnessed individuals in desperate need of basic wound care, first aid, and consistent medical attention. "TPM is a Nevada nonprofit born out of something we couldn’t unsee: people on the street in downtown Las Vegas who needed basic wound care, first aid, and someone who would actually show up week after week," Tomi explains. From these observations, "Sidewalk Sundays" was born—a weekly outreach providing vital services like wound care, harm reduction, and Narcan to unhoused neighbors at McWilliams and H Street. This hands-on approach soon blossomed into a full-fledged organization, complete with clinical protocols, volunteer training, and partnerships with academic institutions and local advocacy groups, even extending to a Pets Medic program for the companions of those they serve.

From Witness to Advocate

Before launching TPM, foundational moments shaped Tomi's path. She learned the importance of fierce advocacy while navigating healthcare decisions for her own family, pushing relentlessly to ensure their best interests were met. Then came June last year, when she and Jasmine watched, aghast, as tear gas filled Fremont Street during a protest. “That lit a fire under us,” she shares. This experience cemented their desire to be deeply embedded within the community, actively participating rather than merely observing. Since then, TPM has empowered others through its Medic Aid Preparedness classes, training 113 individuals with the tools and knowledge to assist their communities. The goal is simple: to equip people to be better prepared for any situation, fostering resilience from the ground up.

The Power of Presence

When asked about the smallest action with the biggest impact, Tomi’s answer is unequivocal: "Showing up. That’s genuinely all it took." This consistent presence—at Sidewalk Sundays, at protests, wherever people needed them—became the cornerstone of their success. It built trust, forged unexpected partnerships, and inspired volunteers to contribute their time and skills. "We lead with love and compassion the rest of the way, and once you do that, the world opens up to so much," she muses. This philosophy of leading with love defines their measure of success, which for them, is not about metrics but about mutual respect and care. "For us, success is love. We lead with love, and we receive love back, and that’s been true since day one."

Building a Future of Care

Looking ahead, Tomi and The People’s Medic are driven by a vision of expanded awareness and collaborative action. They aspire to establish 24-hour community cooling stations that offer both free healthcare and education, creating sanctuaries for those most vulnerable to the elements. Their long-term goals include a dedicated mental health facility alongside their community center, addressing a critical gap in care for individuals struggling with mental illness. Tomi herself is pursuing psychiatric mental health training to contribute personally to this endeavor. The inspiration for this tireless work often comes from the community itself, but above all, from her wife, Jasmine, who embodies the compassionate, equitable care they strive to provide. With unwavering dedication, The People’s Medic continues to build a future where every individual can experience stability, dignity, and, most importantly, love.
