Portrait of Robert Banghart
When I woke up in that hospital bed, I was at the lowest point of my entire life. I had nothing. I had almost lost everything, including my life itself.

One day, not so long ago, Robert Banghart found himself at the absolute lowest point imaginable. Attacked, left for dead, and brought back to life twice by emergency responders, he woke in a hospital bed with nothing but the grim reality of his addiction and homelessness. It was in this profound moment of despair, when all strength had vanished, that a simple offer—a scholarship to a treatment center—opened a door that would change the entire trajectory of his life. That door, which he describes as being opened for him rather than by him, led to a path of recovery that has transformed him into one of Las Vegas's most dedicated advocates for those battling substance use disorder and homelessness.

A Life Rebuilt, a Purpose Discovered

Robert’s journey to Las Vegas began in 1999, working as a chef on the Strip for culinary giants like Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse, all while entrenched in his addiction. Today, his life is markedly different. He is a person in long-term recovery since August 10, 2018, and has channeled his lived experience into a multifaceted career dedicated to helping others. As the Director of Community Engagement at Crossroads of Southern Nevada, the state's largest indigent detox and substance use disorder treatment center, he plays a crucial role in providing vital resources and support. His commitment extends further as the VP of Community and Governmental Affairs at the Shine A Light Foundation, Board President for Narcan At Night—which hosts Nevada’s largest overdose awareness event—and as a Community Faculty Associate of Roseman University College of Medicine.

His immersion in community leadership is deep, having graduated from Leadership Las Vegas in 2023. This program further honed his ability to contribute to the betterment of his community, solidifying his role as a connector and change-maker.

The Ripple Effect of Recovery

Robert’s work is deeply personal, driven by an intimate understanding of the struggles faced by those he serves. He emphasizes that the community he supports—individuals experiencing addiction and homelessness—needs not just services, but hope and connection. He carries countless stories, but it is the overarching theme of impact that resonates most profoundly. “The ripple effect of one person finding their recovery echoes throughout so many lives,” he shares. Witnessing individuals reclaim their lives and discover their purpose is a constant source of inspiration, demonstrating the profound collective impact his work creates.

He offers distinct advice for those starting their own recovery journey and for those entering the field of addiction support. To those in recovery, he stresses that they are not alone. “You’re truly on the verge of a completely different life, one you could have never imagined. Just hold onto us until it arrives.” For those looking to work in the field, he advises deep introspection: “Make sure it’s your purpose.” He acknowledges the immense emotional toll, describing the frequent calls about overdoses, relapses, and desperate families. This isn't a 9-to-5 job; it's a 24/7 commitment. However, the joy of seeing someone rebuild their life outweighs the heartache, making self-care and balance essential for sustainability.

Redefining Success and Building Connections

Robert’s definition of success has evolved dramatically. Initially, it was personal and foundational: simple milestones like looking in the mirror without self-hatred, obtaining a driver’s license, or securing a job were huge victories. Today, his perspective has broadened. “It’s less about me and more about what I’m building around me,” he explains. Success now centers on connecting people, driving real change in the city, opening doors for others, and nurturing the next generation of leaders who will continue this vital work. He finds inspiration not in titles or platforms, but in “good humans”—those who take the time to connect, mentor, and simply be present with others.

He is fortunate to be surrounded by a diverse group of such individuals, who reinforce his belief in the power of genuine human connection. This network of supportive relationships underpins his drive to continue forging positive change.

Paving the Way Forward

Looking ahead, Robert remains steadfast in his mission. He aims to continue growing both personally and professionally, expanding his ability to connect those in need with the services and support available. He is committed to seeking out new resources and initiatives that can strengthen the recovery ecosystem in Las Vegas and beyond. His ultimate goal is to foster “real, long-lasting change in our city and beyond,” by building people up, educating the community, and continuously pushing the needle forward for the individuals and families he serves. His journey from personal struggle to impactful leadership embodies the spirit of resilience and community building that defines a true Vegas influencer.
