In a small Las Vegas salon in 2014, she found herself chatting with her new hairstylist, Tzigane, about an upcoming trip to South Africa. When Melissa mentioned her destination – a tiny, remote game reserve called Balule, specifically the Toro Yaka lodge – Tzigane nearly stopped cutting. As it turned out, Tzigane, a South African native, was getting married in Balule the week after Melissa’s trip, and her family had rented out the very same lodge. This improbable encounter, bridging thousands of miles and a shared, obscure destination, would ultimately redefine Melissa’s professional journey.
The Heat of the Kitchen
Melissa Sayegh's career began far from the polished floors of a salon. Growing up in Southern California, a television commercial for Le Cordon Bleu ignited a passion she hadn't realized could be a career. At 19, she moved to Las Vegas for culinary school, embracing the independence and fresh start the city offered. What began as a temporary move evolved into a 14-year odyssey through high-volume kitchens, bakeries, private chef gigs, and fine dining establishments. She rose through the ranks, even holding a Sous Chef position at Gallagher’s Steakhouse and helping to open Harlo Steakhouse.
Her life revolved around the culinary world, where she honed skills in crisis management, tight scheduling, team leadership, and guest service under immense pressure. "Cooking was not just my job; it was who I was," Melissa explains, recalling the profound identity she built behind the kitchen line. The scariest part of contemplating a change was the potential loss of that identity, stepping into a space where she didn’t know who she was without a chef knife in her hand.
A New Recipe for Leadership
Despite her success, the relentless pace of professional kitchens began to take its toll. Burnout became a familiar companion. Melissa was surprised by how seamlessly her extensive culinary background translated into managing a luxury salon. The operational demands, team leadership, and guest experience focus were remarkably similar. The critical difference, however, was the ability to engage directly with clients. "I get to interact directly with our clients and build long-term relationships instead of hiding in the kitchen," she notes.

Stepping away from the stove allowed Melissa to rediscover aspects of herself that had been overshadowed by the demanding culinary lifestyle.
