A Defining Choice

Angel Mendez, a filmmaker and cinematographer based in Las Vegas, didn't always envision a career behind the lens. His creative journey began, perhaps serendipitously, with a beard. For over a decade, Mendez worked in the automotive industry, a stable and predictable path. Yet, a casual decision to start a YouTube channel, "Beard Dood," filming product reviews on his phone, inadvertently sparked a passion. His wife, noticing his deepening interest, gifted him his first camera, a Sony A6300, for Christmas. This seemingly small gesture set in motion a profound shift.

When the COVID-19 pandemic led to a layoff, Mendez found himself with the time and impetus to explore his burgeoning interest in earnest. A friend's request to shoot a music video, despite Mendez having no prior experience, became a pivotal moment. Charging a modest $50 and learning through YouTube tutorials, he found the process surprisingly natural. After a second, equally successful music video, he realized this wasn't just luck. More artists sought his unique vision, and filmmaking slowly transitioned from a hobby to a viable source of income. Then came the call from his old job, offering his position back. It was a crossroads, a choice between security and an uncertain, yet exhilarating, future. Mendez chose the latter. "I told myself that if I could cover my rent, I would figure out everything else," he recalls of that pivotal decision. "That decision shaped the path I’m on today."

The Evolution of Craft and Collaboration

The initial years were a crucible of challenges, marked by slow seasons and moments of doubt. Yet, Mendez persisted, constantly learning and building. Today, as the force behind Thirty3 M3dia and Darkframe Productions, he is a full-time filmmaker, specializing in music videos, branded content, and narrative films. While he creates impressive commercial work and experimental music videos, his short films stand out as his proudest achievements.

Two films, Kappa and Fractured, mark significant milestones in his artistic development. Kappa, a horror short, was the first project where multiple hands helped bring his vision to life, laying the groundwork for future collaborations. It pushed boundaries, including challenging underwater shots that remain some of his favorites. Fractured, filmed at the evocative Nelson Ghost Town, represented a significant leap in scale and ambition. With a larger crew, intricate practical effects, and a unified vision, its premiere at Area15 transformed it into a shared experience, not just an uploaded piece of content. These projects, Mendez explains, "represent the moment my work became bigger than me. They showed me what could happen when the right people believed in an idea, came together, and built an entire world from nothing.”

Bridging Vision and Reality

Mendez views the perennial gap between his creative taste and current skill as a driving force rather than a deterrent. This dynamic tension, he believes, fuels his growth. He embraces experimentation, understanding that not every idea will translate perfectly from concept to screen. Each attempt, even those that fall short, provides invaluable lessons and clarifies what he needs to learn or approach differently next time. He also understands the power of resourcefulness, candidly assessing his own abilities and then seeking the right collaborators, tools, or solutions to bridge the gap.

His advice to aspiring creatives emphasizes passion and community. He urges them to "have fun, and don’t forget about the art," reminding them that fulfillment comes not just from financial success but from the joy of creation itself. Mendez also champions connection, stressing that the industry is a community where reaching out, asking questions, and collaborating are paramount. He credits many of his closest friendships and opportunities to simple online messages.

The Horizon of Narrative

For Mendez, success is not a static finish line. While achieving financial stability was a significant accomplishment, he learned that one goal merely gives way to the next. His current aspiration is to build a self-sustaining business that can thrive even when he steps away, a testament to his dedication to team-building and operational maturity.

Looking ahead, Mendez is focused on larger narrative projects. Ideas for either a feature film or a short-form series are in development, aiming to capture the same excitement and ambition as Kappa and Fractured. While his narrative work has often leaned into horror, a new mobster series is also on the table, offering a fresh, challenging direction. Whatever form his next big project takes, Angel Mendez is building toward something that feels grand, creatively demanding, and another significant step forward in his evolving cinematic journey, continuing to shape the visual landscape of Las Vegas's creative community.
