“I’ve never been particularly good at playing it safe… I’m a social-impact entrepreneur, an inventor, a community organizer, and, apparently, a professional builder of things people occasionally tell me are ‘a little ambitious.’”

Joy Hoover arrived in Las Vegas in 2010 with a clear mission: to combat human trafficking. She envisioned a temporary stay, focused on launching a nonprofit dedicated to supporting women and children. Little did she know, this city, which she initially saw as a job site, would become the crucible for her life’s most profound transformations, testing her resolve while revealing an unparalleled capacity for innovation and resilience.

Nearly 17 years later, Las Vegas is irrevocably home. It’s where she’s built her career, raised her family, and, through a series of deeply personal and professional challenges, discovered the relentless drive to ask a simple yet powerful question: "What can we do differently?" This inquiry has been the bedrock of her work, pushing her to challenge norms and forge new paths in the often-stagnant landscape of personal safety.

A Defining Moment in Darkness

The trajectory of Hoover’s commitment to safety was irrevocably altered in 2013, right in the heart of Las Vegas. Already immersed in anti-trafficking and violence prevention work, she was accustomed to being the voice on the other end of a crisis call. But then, the unthinkable happened: her mother-in-law and brother-in-law were tragically killed by her father-in-law, just eight days after Hoover had given birth to her child.

“I had spent years helping other people navigate violence, but suddenly I was standing inside the kind of story I had spent my career trying to prevent,” she recounts. The trauma, particularly the chilling detail that her mother-in-law’s final words were captured on a 911 call, solidified her understanding that the moments before violence are as critical as its aftermath. This intensely personal tragedy didn't define her life, but it profoundly shaped its direction, fueling an urgent need to empower individuals with tangible tools for proactive safety.

Esōes: Reinventing Personal Safety

Out of this conviction, Esōes Cosmetics was born. More than just a beauty brand, Esōes is a safety company operating at the dynamic intersection of beauty, technology, and personal protection. Hoover observed a pervasive societal tendency to place the burden of safety on potential victims, often through restrictive advice like “don’t walk alone” or “don’t drink too much.” She sought to flip this script.

Esōes develops practical, accessible safety solutions embedded into everyday items. Their flagship product is a patented smart lipstick featuring a Bluetooth-connected panic button, allowing users to discreetly signal for help. Complementing this, they offer instant drink-testing strips to detect common date-rape drugs. “I wanted people to have actual tools, not another list of things they’re supposed to do to avoid being hurt,” Hoover explains. Her vision extends beyond products; she aims to cultivate a comprehensive safety ecosystem, shifting the conversation from avoidance to empowerment, making personal safety an integrated, less stigmatized aspect of daily life.

Rising from the Ashes

Entrepreneurship is rarely a straight path, and Hoover’s journey hit a devastating roadblock in 2024 when a fire consumed her home and business. The blaze destroyed their living space, manufacturing facilities, product inventory, and the very foundation of Esōes. For many, this would be a catastrophic end. But for Hoover, it was another test of her foundational belief: if something needs to exist, she cannot walk away.

“The hardest decision wasn’t deciding to keep going on the day of the fire,” she reflects. “It was choosing, over and over again, to keep going in the months afterward when there was no guarantee it would work.” Amidst 419 days of displacement, navigating immense financial and emotional strain, she and her family rebuilt. They restored their home, reconstructed their manufacturing operations, and painstakingly resurrected Esōes, piece by piece. This experience cemented her understanding that true entrepreneurship isn't merely about a brilliant idea, but about an unyielding commitment to that idea and the people it serves, even when everything screams for surrender.

The Unfinished Symphony of Building

Looking ahead, Joy Hoover remains a builder. Her immediate focus is scaling Esōes, transforming it from an online discovery into an enduring company that fundamentally alters perceptions of personal safety. She envisions their products in the hands of people everywhere, proving that safety tools can be empowering, not fear-based.

Beyond Esōes, her ambition continues to churn. She plans to create more businesses, organizations, and initiatives that tackle real-world problems, always linking arms with survivors and amplifying unheard stories. On a personal front, success now means building a life that feels good to live, prioritizing family and well-being alongside her monumental ambitions. She aims to inspire her children through her work, maintain a vibrant marriage, and relish the life they’ve fought so hard to rebuild. “I’m less interested in proving I can do something and more interested in building things that actually matter,” she states, encapsulating her path forward: more building, bigger ideas, and a conscious pursuit of breathing room in a life dedicated to impactful creation.
