“I always felt owning a business is like having a kid, you’re never really ready but as long as you have a good support system and a little knowledge in what may be coming you’ll be ok.”

The scent of freshly baked bread often signals comfort and home. For Melissa Salinas, owner of I A’Dough You Bakery, it’s also the smell of liberation. After two decades in a demanding office manager role, enduring the toll of stress and anxiety, Melissa made a pivotal decision: to trade the corporate grind for the satisfying rhythm of kneading dough. It was a leap of faith, spurred by deep conversations with her supportive husband and an undeniable passion for baking that had long simmered beneath the surface.

A Local's Love for Loaves

Melissa is a rare Las Vegas native, a "unicorn" as she describes herself, having spent her entire life in the valley. Her roots run deep, not just in the community but within her family—a bustling household with five children, including a set of triplets. The bakery, founded about two and a half years ago, is truly a family affair, from its clever name coined by her husband to the charming artwork created by one of her children. While she had previously dabbled in custom cakes as a side hustle, it was her sourdough bread and muffins that truly captivated her family and neighbors, who consistently urged her to sell her creations. This encouragement, coupled with a desire for a healthier, more fulfilling life, propelled her to transform a cherished hobby into a burgeoning business.

"After a lot of conversations with my husband and his full support, I decided that my hobby and side hustle was going to be how I would support my family," Melissa recalls. This decision marked a profound shift, prioritizing well-being and personal passion over the security of a long-held career. It was a moment of profound courage, embracing the unknown with the full weight of her family's future resting on her ability to bake.

Rising to the Challenge

Building I A’Dough You Bakery hasn't been without its trials, particularly the constant juggle between family life and entrepreneurial demands. "I’ve had a really hard time balancing the two. My life is so hectic with family and trying to grow this new business," Melissa admits. Yet, this inherent challenge fuels her determination to create a business her family can be proud of, one that offers customers baked goods they eagerly anticipate, whether at local markets or through direct orders. Her vision extends beyond her current cottage setup, dreaming of a brick-and-mortar location that would serve as a permanent home for her delicious offerings.

Melissa is also deeply committed to fostering a supportive community among fellow small business owners. Drawing from her own early struggles to find guidance, she makes it a point to offer advice to those just starting out. "When I was first getting started it was difficult to ask other vendors questions on how they got started or what process do I begin with. I don’t want to do that, I think this community is stronger with more of us." Her philosophy champions collaboration over competition, believing that a thriving ecosystem of small businesses benefits everyone, encouraging more people to shop local and support independent ventures.

The Power of Stepping Out

Success, for Melissa, is measured not just in sales but in personal growth. A self-professed introvert, she has bravely pushed past her comfort zone, engaging with customers, creating videos, and actively putting herself and her brand out there. This daily act of self-promotion, initially difficult, has become increasingly natural. "I feel so proud watching my business grow because I stepped out of my comfort zone, it really was a struggle," she shares. The satisfaction of repeat customers who actively seek her out serves as powerful validation, affirming that she is indeed doing something right.

Her journey has also been profoundly inspired by others in the Las Vegas community, particularly Guiliano from 303 in the Cut. Melissa admired his dedication to uplifting other businesses, and a chance encounter led to a pivotal video feature that significantly boosted her visibility. This experience reinforced her belief in community support and inspired her to pay it forward.

The Next Chapter: A Permanent Home

Looking ahead, Melissa is building towards a permanent physical location and expanding into wholesale partnerships. She envisions a space where customers can easily access their favorite breads, muffins, and cookies without needing to pre-order or track her down at markets. "I want a place where people know they can come and grab their favorite items without feeling like they need to hunt me down," she explains. This next step represents not just business growth, but a deeper integration into the fabric of the Las Vegas community, offering a consistent, comforting presence for those who cherish her handcrafted baked goods. Melissa Salinas is not just selling bread; she's building a legacy, one delicious loaf at a time.
