The Neon Made Me Do It: How Maya Alvarez Opened Her First Boutique on Fremont

From casino cocktail trays to her own front door

For seven years, Maya worked cocktail service on the Strip. Great tips, brutal hours, and a nagging feeling that she was building someone else's dream. She started sewing on her days off — remaking vintage denim, sourcing turquoise from her aunt in New Mexico, selling one-of-one pieces out of a suitcase at Sunday markets.

"People kept saying, 'Where's your store?' And I'd laugh, because a store felt like something other people had."

The first ninety days

The first month, she made $412. The second month, $900. The third month, a Vegas stylist walked in, bought six pieces, and tagged her on Instagram. By month six she'd hired her first employee — her cousin Jasmine.

Her advice to anyone eyeing their own leap:

- Sign the lease before you feel ready. Readiness is retroactive. - Price for the person you want to become, not the person you are. - Community first, customers second. The neighbors on your block will save you.

What's next
