Devin Carter dealt his last hand on a Tuesday at 3 a.m. He'd already accepted the offer, but he wanted one more shift to say goodbye to the regulars. "A few of them cried," he laughs. "One of them tipped me a hundred bucks and told me not to blow it."
He didn't. Six months later he was a junior product manager at a Las Vegas-based fintech, and eighteen months after that, he was leading a team of four.
The unlikely bridge
Devin didn't code. He didn't have a degree. What he had was twelve years of watching human behavior across a felt table — who bluffs, who folds, who tilts, who tips.
"Product is just people plus constraints," he says. "The pit is the same thing with cards."
How he actually made the switch
- He wrote in public. A weekly newsletter breaking down casino UX from a dealer's perspective. It got him three interviews. - He treated networking like a shift. Two coffee chats a week, every week, for a year. - He didn't wait to be qualified. He applied to fifty-two roles before the yes.
